Weekly Fishing Report

The weather's been pretty settled after the wet start to Dec. The fishing's continued as it has lately, short bursts of activity, long periods of very little. When they're on they're going hard though. We've been trying a lot of different areas and depths, from 20m out to 100 odd and it's pretty similar at most places. We've done a couple of overnighters at Mayor, and it's perked up quite a lot. We did well on snapper, trevally and tarakihi on the first one, a day later it was mostly red snapper and tarakihi. In fact we never caught one snapper and only a few trevs. So they're still following the on/off pattern we're seeing in close. Never mind, they're around in good numbers, there's just so much food around at present they're spoilt for choice. The next one was targeting hapuku, and it was the best trip we've had in a very long time with bass, hapuku, gemfish and a small bluenose all coming on board. A good start to the new season. We also caught a heap of flying fish at S.E. Bay that night, a bit of a bonus as they're good bait and good fun netting them.
