PLENTY OF TRIPS
24 May, 2008

Still a bit unsettled weatherwise, but enough nice days to get plenty of trips in.

The fishing has been more consistent too, still plenty of snapper, with golden snapper, trevally and kahawai among them, but we're seeing more tarakihi regularyly.

Theres been alot of good sized ones coming up too.

Mayor is still fishing well with a similar good variety of species coming up.

The drift fishing is also on the improve, mainly with gemfish and bluenose being caught, but the odd hapuka and bass as well.

Had a good day on Sunday, plenty of different species of reef fish, mainly red snapper and tarakihi, but some normal snapper and trevally thrown in for good measure. We also had a bit of fun with some kingies which were cruising around the reef structure. Biggest would have been 7-8kg, with a few other legal ones, all of which were released.

WEATHER SETTLING, FISHING CONSISTENT
18 May, 2008

Well, its been nice to see a bit of clear skies and more settled weather.

The fishing seems to be much the same as before the bad weather, although we've been starting to see a few more tarakihi starting to show up.

Still plenty of snapper around, and plenty of little ones too, though theres some nice ones amongst them.

We even picked up a legal kingie and a few around the 70cm mark, while bottom fishing for tarakihi.

We also caught a kahawhai that had a belly full of crayfish puerilus about 1cm long - hadn't seen that before.

So, still good fishing and good weather coming up, definitely an improvement.

HARDER FISHING IN THE DEEPER WATER
13 May, 2008

Well, another frustrating couple of weeks for the keen fishos.

These highs, lows, and fronts just keep rolling on through. When we get a couple of settled days, it seems to be midweek, and come the weekend it's back to marginal at best.

The harbour would have to be the most consistent at the moment.

Still more snapper around than tarakihi. We picked up a reasonable tally around karewa on a half day and Mayor's still producing pretty well when you can get out there, although the hapuka fishing is still pretty hard. Otherwise its pretty much the same ole same ole.

On Sunday we had the Hamilton Cossie Club and fished our way out to the Penguins via Pudney, and some of the closer inshore spots. We picked up snapper throughout, with everyone getting a good feed, but nothing exceptional. Where we expected to do best in the deeper water, turned out to be one of the harder spots for the day. But with 95% of the catch snapper, they were happy punters. Wade (the decky) managed a 5lber, but most of them were between legal (27cm) and 34cm.

Plenty of weed floating throughout, as a result of the recent SW winds we have been getting hammered by, but hopefully that will settle off with the next couple of calm days forecast, and the fishing will pick up as a result. Will keep you posted.
